Guardian Heroes
This is not just the best beat 'em up game, but simply the best game. It's 3 genres in one and has an awesome story and VS mode that no other game can rival! I'll go over how awesome it is now.
Gameplay:
Okay this is a beat ‘em up I believe the official genre is called. It’s one of those side scrolling games where lots of bad guys come onto the screen and you beat them to death. But unlike those sucky games, this one does not have like 2 basic attacks and like 1 super attack that drains life or mana or any health of explosion pickups and such. Instead it uses awesome combos like in Street Fighter 2 and those types of games. Each char as their own unique attack sets and different combos to do, only a few chars a similar with a few being outright clones. There are also chars that can’t even crouch or jump and only have 1 attack such as the villagers, making them useless, but it’s still nice to have the option of using them if we want to. So that’s 2 of it’s 3 genres, the 3rd is RPG. By that I mean you earn EXP for using spells and punching things. You even get EXP for hitting dead bodies if you can keep juggling them. Then for each level you get a point to add to a stat and get harder, better, faster or stronger.
Story Mode:
You can choose from 4 characters to play as with 1
unlockable char. You have Han the strong guy with a big sword, Ginjirou the
ninja, Nicole the little girl who heals people and Randy the awesome magician
with an epic bunny. Oh and the unlockable Serena, a well balanced char that's
pretty much the best one. This mode can be played by 1 or 2 players
cooperatively, which is pretty silly as they should have made this 6 player
just like their VS mode (explained later). There are 6 chars in story mode after
all if you also include that Undead Hero who always accompanies you.
Anyway, you choose your character and start playing and the
story starts. Not going to spoil anything at all with that, but the story
changes depending on your choices with there be about 40 different levels in
total, so spoiling all of it would be a challenge anyway. All paths lead to the
same point in the middle where you must confront a damn hard midboss. Luckily
you have 2 immortal allies (unless you play as Serena) to help you with that,
but it’s hard for something that’s only half-way through the game. Also that
part has the longest story scene in the game and is unavoidable making it very
annoying to those who have played the game a few times already. But after that
the paths divulge again and the ending is up to you to decide with 5 possible
endings.
VS Mode:
The VS Mode is crazy awesome! Although this game is far
older than SSBB, it has a similar but far better VS mode. There’s no silly stage
knocking off, just plain awesome fighting with over 40 characters! OVER 40
CHARACTERS!!! Sure some are a bit useless, but I don’t know any other game that
lets you play as all enemies, even the henchmen guys and the epic final bosses!
You can also choose the level of all characters that will be in the match to a
max of lvl198. There are 6 slots for players or CPU controlled characters. You
can set teams too in anyway you wish and each. Each char as 6 costumes and
unlike in most games, you can choose the same colour for duplicate characters
and have everyone look the same. As for the modes, there’s just a normal battle
mode, and a time mode where you will keep coming back to life when killed and
win by getting more points.
Oh, about those 40+ characters, you have to unlock them in
story mode first in order to use them in VS mode. It doesn’t get boring playing
through story mode over and over again thankfully, as there are so many possibilities.
It’s got amazing replay value!
Final Comments:
I've been playing this game for over 10 years and it's always been just
epic. Now that I have the tools and talent I want to revive this game
that deserves much more recognition and especially needs to be ported,
or better have a proper sequal (Guardian Heroes Advance has nothing on
the original). So I am trying to make my own sort-of sequal using Mugen
where I will recreate and try to improve the characters. I will not be
able to make a proper storymode or have 6 players though as Mugen does
not yet allow that. I also have a friend called BurnKing who's doing a
similar thing but isn't using Mugen. He's using something that'll do
the opposite of mine in that it'll ONLY be able to do a storymode like
thing. So our games will go well together I think.
